Lachlan Veitch

The first 10 years of Lachlan’s life were spent in the French Alps. He got his first pair of skis at 3 years old and has been skiing ever since. He joined his local race club, CS Manigod, when he was 6 and trained every weekend and Wednesday during the season. He won his first race that same year. In 2008, his last season with Manigod, he finished 7th in the FFS (Fédération Ski Français) standings for the Mont Blanc region having made 3 podium finishes. Later that year he returned to live in Scotland.

Lachlan was selected for the British Children’s Alpine Ski team for season 2010/2011 and in April 2011 he took place in the Scottish and British Championships, which took place at Les Trois Valleys, France. He managed podium positions in all races, including the international events, which he was skiing against some of Europe’s finest children racers. The highlight was winning the British children(1) Slalom Championship even though slalom is not his best discipline.

Harvey McLean recognises Lachlan’s talent and is one of his proud sponsors. Read more about Lachlan on http://www.lachlanveitch.co.uk/

The Macallan Burns bottling increases six fold

A limited edition of The Macallan, launched to mark the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth, has sold recently at auction for £1,250, more that six times its original price. This increase in value represents the fastest annual investment increase for any Macallan expression.

Two hundred and fifty bottles taken from two casks bearing the number 1759 - the year of Burns's birth - were first available to buy in June 2009 for £199 and quickly sold out, due to the highly collectable nature of this special bottling. The whisky, from two sherry oak casks, was bottled at 46% ABV and presented in a stunning glass decanter with an individually numbered Burns poem enclosed.

Packaged in a hand-made Scottish red pine box, it was designed by master cabinet maker Harvey McLean, whose workshop is only a few hundred yards from Burns's birthplace in Alloway, Ayrshire. The style of the box was based on the packaging used in the 1990's for The Macallan 25yo Anniversary Malt.
Patricia Lee, marketing assistant, The Macallan, said: "2009 had great historical relevance for Scotland with the 250th anniversary of Burns's birth therefore, we were keen to mark this occasion with our own celebratory bottling of The Macallan.

"The fact that it sold out quickly told us that this was a collectable item for avid whisky fans around the world. This auction shows the real strength of interest in the bottling, combining two great Scottish names. We are delighted that the sale exceeded all expectations and reinforced the value of The Macallan brand."

The Macallan Whisky Presentation Boxes

Ayr based Harvey McLean Custom Joinery has just completed one of its most unusual commissions to date… having created custom built presentation boxes for a very famous limited edition whisky. Managing director Harvey McLean explains:

“When we were first approached by The Macallan Whisky, I was really excited that one of the world's most awarded and admired single malt distillers from Speyside would have an interest in us. At first I thought - great, we are going to be asked to carry out a major refit of their head office, or their visitor centre, which is of course our area of expertise for which we are renowned. Perhaps they knew we are involved in the amazing refurbishment at Turnberry Hotel and they wanted us to do something similar for them.

They were looking for boxes made in Ayrshire from timber sourced locally as if it was made in the period of Burns. They also wanted it rough in appearance. We made it in off the saw Scots Pine which was a novelty for the guys in the workshop as they are more used to using top quality timbers such as American Cherry and Walnut with a smooth polished finish.”

But no… .the enquiry was just for some very small wooden boxes. In fact 250 of them, all specially designed with great attention to detail and hand crafted.

It transpired that The Macallan has produced a unique limited edition malt whisky, limited to 250 bottles only, commemorating Robert Burns 250th anniversary and the Homecoming Scotland celebrations. No doubt these will only be for the most discerning collectors and carry a price tag to match!

“I was really pleased when we learned that The Macallan had identified us in their search for a high quality Scottish custom joinery manufacturer. We had fun doing the project and I’m really proud to have this association. Maybe next time we can refit their offices!”

Joinery firm is all fired up on waste

WASTE not, want not.
That’s the new motto of an Ayr joinery firm determined to do their bit to save the planet.

For Harvey McLean Custom Joinery has set new standards in environmental friendliness. Fed-up with splashing out £10,000 a year disposing of waste products in skips, the company decided to put it to good use. Managing director Harvey McLean explained that he opted to install a revolutionary new recycling process, which not only disposes of virtually all of its waste but heats the building as well.

He said: “We invested £24,000 in this system, but when you consider that we were spending £10,000 a year on skip hire for our wood waste removal alone, together with hefty heating bills on top, it was an easier decision to make and I reckon the new system will save me about £14,000 a year.

“On top of that we can sell the briquettes that we don’t burn ourselves.”

The company produces large amounts of wood waste during the manufacture of their custom-made interiors for hotels, restaurants and offices, as well domestic kitchens and furniture. The new system takes all of the wood shavings and sawdust and converts it into compacted briquettes. These are in turn burned in a commercial wood burning stove, providing the workshop with all of its heating requirements.

Mr McLean added: “Our commitment to the environment has always been a key philosophy. We only use timber which comes from sustainable and fully managed renewable resources, and it’s a really great feeling to take that commitment to the next level. Our motto is ‘when we say custom-built – we mean custom-built’ and now we can add ‘when we say green – we mean green’.

“Everyone benefits. Our reduced overheads mean we can deliver even greater value in our pricing and our customers can be certain of our environmental pedigree. Now that the colder weather is upon us, the workshop is really warm and comfortable, so our team loves it too. It just goes to show that investing in the environment can provide short-term payback as well as long-term benefit.”
